Dear West Side Family,

It has been a joy to journey through Advent together, and I am so looking forward to our worship this coming week as we complete our Advent journey in Christmas Eve celebrations. I also have exciting news on behalf of the staff and leadership here at West Side as we close out 2024 and look ahead to the New Year: we will continue to worship as one family at 10:00am in January!

Why is one 10:00am service in January exciting?
Our sincere hope is to be one church family that worships at two different times. Lately, however, it's felt like we were becoming two different families, with a 'first service' and 'second service' generational divide. That divide is troubling. We did not combine services in December with any idea that it would continue into the New Year. However, we have loved the vibrancy of combined worship during Advent — loved seeing the full range of generations together at one time in our sanctuary and building — loved the opportunity to experiment with different ways of worshiping together. The hope in remaining together for one service in the New Year is that God strengthens our mutual worship and friendships.

There is another very important reason for going to one service in January. Remaining together for one worship time on a Sunday morning is also essential for the wellbeing of our staff and volunteer leaders. We are stretched thin. We do not have robust children, youth, and Sunday hospitality teams. We need a season to simplify and regroup so that we do not burn out key leaders among our staff and volunteers.

So here is the plan: We will continue to worship at 10am in the New Year.

• Pastor Laurie will be preaching a sermon series called, "A New Song" that explores how God connects our worship to the new thing that Jesus is doing in our lives and our world.
• Our music teams will work together to provide whatever music is most edifying for the worship on that day.
• Our Sunday morning instruction and hospitality teams will offer classes and gatherings before and/or after the 10 o'clock hour to gather and equip us to follow Jesus' lead in our daily lives.
• We will make the most of our combined Sundays to share the vision for West Side moving ahead in 2025 and prayerfully recruit and rebuild teams that support our Sunday gatherings for all ages.
• 
  

Most importantly, we have an opportunity to approach God together, with humility and hope, asking the Holy Spirit to transform us into an intergenerational and multiethnic community that makes Jesus known to all of West Seattle.

How long are we going to do this?
Honestly, we don't know. We know that Easter Sunday is a definite two service celebration! Between now and then the goal is to renew relationships around a shared vision and dedication to discipleship regardless of our preferred service time or worship style. It may be that by Lent we have the depth of relationships and breadth of volunteer teams to restore both worship times. Wouldn't that be exciting? Or it may be we need until Easter. Until then, let's celebrate the new thing that Jesus is doing among us and will do through us as we gather to praise him together.

We are excited to share that a group of our dedicated youth will be embarking on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic this summer from June 27-July 13. They will once again be serving at the Park School in Caraballo.

Please pray for our team as we spend the next 6+ months training and growing together as a team.

We also need to raise financial support… and we would like to do this through serving our congregation. If you have need for childcare, yardwork, or any other work you need extra hands for please let Stacy (stacy@wspc.org) know and she will help you connect with students to assist you.

Your support will allow our youth to actively share their faith and make a real difference in the lives of others.

Mental Health First Aid teaches the skills needed to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, as well as how to provide someone with initial support until they are connected with appropriate professional help. Renewal Ministries is offering a teaching retreat on prayer, A Life of Prayer In Uncertain Times: Lessons from the Saints, on November 2, 9:30am-2:30pm, at the Peace and Spirituality Center in Bellevue.

A teacher of the history of Christian Spirituality, Dr. Hindmarsh took his D.Phil. degree in theology at Oxford University in 1993. He has since published and spoken widely to international audiences on the history of early British evangelicalism.
He speaks often to lay audiences as well as preaching in his own church and elsewhere. A former staff worker for Youth for Christ and an active lay member of an Anglican Church, he is married to Carolyn, and they have three children: Bethany, Matthew and Sam.

Sessions during this retreat will include:

Join us for a special Sunday combined worship time on September 29 as we gather as one church family for worship, fellowship and discussion. Rev. Dr. Jeff Keuss joins us in worship to share insights into Young Adults and the church from his new book, Defiant Hope, Active Love: What Young Adults Are Seeking in Places of Work, Faith, and Community.

We will gather for coffee and conversation at 9:00am — Worship and discussion circles from 9:30-11:00am (with a special extended discipleship curriculum for the children when they adjourn to their worship spaces). And just so no one goes home hungry, we will enjoy an informal pizza brunch together after worship concludes. The purpose of New Life Media is to provide Somali-language resources that communicate the Gospel in a clear, relevant way via satellite TV, social media & websites.  The audience is encouraged to contact us so that our NLM team can build relationships to help individuals understand the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus Christ and (whenever possible) become part of a local church. The main response to this media ministry comes from the Somali heartland on the Horn of Africa.  Most Somalis live in lands where communicating the Christian faith is strictly forbidden.

The New Life Media team has its main office in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.  Michael Madany functions as Project Support Advisor from his home office in Renton. His tasks include assisting with website content, database for contacts, reporting, donor relations and global networking.

New Life Media uses these main platforms to penetrate the barriers that prevent most Somalis from encountering the Good News of Jesus Christ:

Hi, we are the Kuskes! It is so nice to “meet” you in this way and we pray that we can meet face to face someday. We moved to Cambodia in August 2020 where we work to see churches planted and disciples made. Our sending organization, Beyond, focuses specifically on starting and supporting movements of house church plants that are multiplying disciples around the world.

Ashlee works administratively to help coordinate pastoral training schedules and to identify the “missional gap,” places where the Gospel has yet to find footing in the rural areas of Cambodia. Brad works medically as a physician at a Korean mission hospital called “Hebron Medical Center” where every patient is seen regardless of their ability to pay and the Gospel is shared with every single patient. He also provides free medical care to the pastors that Ashlee is working with. For the past year, Brad coordinated the translation and production of a discover Bible study mobile application called “Waha.” It is available for free on iOS and Android in many languages. You should check it out! Our boys, Eli (13yrs) and Caleb (10yrs), have fallen in love with their new home and community in Cambodia. We can’t thank you enough for your ongoing prayers and financial support of what God is doing in Cambodia.

OMF International missionaries Keith and Celia Olson serve in Hokkaido, Japan in church support, arts (Celia), theological education (Keith), and hospitality. We love living in Hokkaido; we enjoy hiking, tea ceremony, and meals with friends. We are excited when we see collaboration among the five small churches we are currently serving, and we mourn with the rural communities whose churches are reflecting the same unfortunate trend of Japan's shrinking population. Especially our hearts yearn for the overburdened and burnt out to find rest in Jesus.

The Full Gospel Pentecostal Federated Church on Delridge caught fire Monday afternoon. (Read about it HERE on the West Seattle Blog.) We visited them on Tuesday to see if West Side could offer any assistance. No help is currently needed, and we received an invitation from their pastor to attend a fellowship event on their front lawn this Sunday, August 18 at 3:00 pm. The location is 5071 Delridge Way SW. A parking lot can be accessed from 24th SW.

Marlon: The Language Software Development (LSDev) designs and produces computer programs for scripture translation, dictionary and grammar building, literacy, and more, including orally. I write how-to-use Helps for a number of these programs and I help test them.

Denise: First, I edit Translator’s Notes. TN’s help mother tongue translators (MTTs) translate Scripture verses accurately. Our current focus is on the Old Testament. I make sure proposed Scripture chapters are ESL- (English-as-a-second-language) friendly. Many TN-writers are brilliant, have translated a minority-language NT, and also know Hebrew or Greek, and I make sure they write simply and succinctly. Secondly, I travel to S. Asia and teach courses that are designed to help pastors and their wives become better leaders. Most attendees came from other large faith systems and, as leaders, they need to learn and then apply Biblical perspective to their own lives and teachings. Courses include Character of God, Bible Study Methods, and Biblical Marriage and so on.

Bruce: I work with a group of Indian leaders each week, both in north and south India, who are focused on major unreached populations. Many of these guys are mid-life leaders looking for fresh restoration of foundations for their second half of life ministry. We call it the 2HC collaborative within Frontier Ventures. We’re grounding them in the whole Biblical Story and Spiritual formation disciplines. We’re translating these teaching into Tamil and Hindi/Urdu. We’re creating videos and curriculum that these men can run with in the days ahead. Each group commits to a 1-year process.

Christy: continues to work with the School of Supernatural ministry (a collaborative project with Frontier Ventures). She’s involved in curriculum development and training. She works with people in international contexts that need spiritual insight and restoration in environments very hostile to Christianity.

Thomas began attending West Side at age 15 where he was active in the youth and then young adult programs. He married Bernice (who started attending at 18) at West Side 38 years ago. In 1992, after praying with the elders, they were sent as West Side missionaries to Germany to work with international teens.

The work in Germany grew across Europe for the next nine years, and eventually Thomas founded YouthCompass in 2001 to focus solely on growing the mission to teens following their parents around the world. In 2012, YouthCompass was merged into Youth for Christ International (YFCI) as the first ministry model specifically for Cross-Cultural Youth. YouthCompass now serves volunteers and staff around the world, demonstrating and communicating the love and message of Jesus to internationally mobile youth.

Many West Siders have often volunteered on Project Compassion, a service project which was held annually in Eastern Europe for 20 years.

In 2014, Thomas was asked to serve on the YFCI World Leadership Team as the Director of Diaspora ministries, responsible for identifying and helping to develop programs for immigrants, migrants, refugees and expats. In 2023, he added to his responsibilities by taking on an additional role as YFCI Director of Global Partnerships, working with organizations such as Alpha, World Vision, the UN, and Lausanne Conference.

There are over 40 million young people who are living outside of their passport country, one of the larger unreached populations in the world. With West Side’s help, we are able to share the Gospel with teens across the world. Thank you!

Carla continues in the mission headquarters finance office in Sanford, Fl processing donations for Ethnos360 mission, its entities, and around 2,600 missionaries worldwide. Ethnos360 purpose statement "Motivated by the love of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, Ethnos360 exists to assist the ministry of the local church through the mobilizing, equipping, and coordinating of believers to evangelize unreached people groups, translate the Scriptures and see indigenous churches established that glorify God." We are grateful for our recent visit to Seattle and the opportunity to worship with you there at West Side Presbyterian. We were challenged and encouraged by the messages to make sure our days count for eternity. It is good to be back in the finance office ministry, and teammates with those making Christ known among unreached people groups. We are thankful for your part in the team that is partnering with us.

Larry and Andrea Ciccarelli have worked in the Mediterranean region for over thirty years on Bible translation projects in Bedouin Arabic, Standard Arabic, Lebanese Arabic, and a number of other dialects and languages. They particularly enjoy working with local and international colleagues on new media and arts projects (chanting, calligraphy, and music, among other genres). Since 2005, Larry and Andrea have served as exegetical and linguistic advisers, working with a team of Christians and Muslims on a translation of the Bible designed to be understandable by Arab readers with little Bible background. Larry and Andrea have two daughters, Amani (born 2004) and Shireen (born 2005).

Dear West Side Presbyterian,

Thank you so much for all of your financial support and prayers this past year. It has been a year of jubilation, for sure! This year, I spent time working with Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship at Western Washington University. I led a small group of 14 girls and led outreaches on campus to Western students. I also took seminary-level courses, learning about theology and the Bible.

I would not have been able to do any of this without your support! Being on campus and being a friend to students is the biggest blessing in my life. I would like to share a story from my time on campus.

Two of my small-group girls I met during a game night hosted by other student leaders and myself. They are roommates, and both prayed that God would pair them with another Christian. The Lord delivered, and they found themselves rooming together and walking into a Christian community the next day. I got to walk one-on-one with both girls throughout the year. We read the book of Jonah and talked about Revelation. We shared personal struggles and deep heartache. At the end of three months together, one said, “I have grown more in my faith over these last few months than I have my whole time being a Christian.”

Now, these girls will lead a small group next year, and they want to inspire and guide another generation of students in the same way they were guided this year. I also got to be their friend, which is more than I could have asked for! It was such a delight to walk with each of the girls in my small group through their respective stories, pray for them, and show them Jesus. Most of all, I get to witness and encourage them to pursue God the way He pursues us.

This next year, I have the honor of continuing in ministry. I have accepted a staff position with Campus Christian Fellowship, the club I worked for this year. I will manage the women’s ministry house, affectionately dubbed “the Mansion”. I am so excited to transition into a longer-term missionary status. Because of this, I am still in charge of raising my support, and I would love to connect with West Side again as I embark on another season of support raising this summer. It has been a joy to partner with you all and work together in Jesus’s mission.

College is such a crucial age. When they enter, students learn who they want to be for the rest of their lives. They have many questions and many more concerns. It is essential that they have people who care for their well-being and growth. And we try to do just that! We encourage students to be involved with a local church, take individual time with God seriously, and, most of all, walk beside them as they navigate what it means to follow God in college, and how that can translate once they graduate. We reach Christian and non-Christian students alike and ultimately hope for their reconciliation with the Lord.

Greetings West Side Members,
 
More than 40 years ago, God directed me to the ministry of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations. Not wanting to quit doing what I love, I went part-time two years ago and jettisoned 13 of my 15 western states, 2,500 of 3,000 CMDA members, and 65 of 75 medical & dental campuses. So, as long as God allows, I plan to continue serving the medicos, i.e., the physicians, dentists, PAs, NPs, and others in Washington and Oregon. I oversee, encourage, equip, and educate volunteer leaders, including docs serving as campus advisors, student leaders of campus chapters, and graduate leaders serving as practicing docs. I visit and speak on the 10 CMDA medical & dental campuses several times yearly, as well as community groups. As individuals request coaching or counseling, I am privileged to comply. Finally, I am blessed to visit retired doctors and sometimes participate in their memorial services. I have been blessed with many life-long friends as we have aged together. 
 
Medicine and our general culture have radically changed in the past 40 years. But human nature has not changed, though we struggle with new issues as we bump up against our largely unbiblical culture. So, in their pursuit and practice of medicine, as in the Church, some flourish as they seek God and his kingdom first, while others get swept up in the short-term promises our culture offers to those practicing medicine.
 
Pray for Christian medical students and doctors, their patients, and their families. Pray they will all seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness and leave the results to him. 
 
Thank you for your faithful prayers and generous support which allows me to represent you to our Christian medicos in Washington and Oregon.
