Morning Devotion for March 13
Shaken – Psalm 62
My soul finds rest in God alone
my salvation comes from him
He alone is my rock and my salvation:
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken
Disruptive events shake our sources of security, and where the Coronavirus is concerned at least three sources of security are experiencing serious shakedown: health, finances and knowledge.
COVID-19 is a threat to health especially among those whose health is already vulnerable or compromised. It is a threat to financial stability, a shake down experienced by investors, small business owners, hourly wage earners and the those in the arts. And how unsettling is it to know so little about a new virus, alongside inadequate testing that would give insight into the true spread of infection?
The good news in any shakedown is the invitation to restored rest in God alone – the source of our security (that is, salvation).
Trust in him at all time, O people.
pour out your hearts to him
for God is our refuge.
How do we take refuge – practically speaking – in God alone? Pour out your hearts to God – in prayer – at every tremor in the rest of life.
One thing God has spoken
two things have I heard:
that you, O God, are strong,
and that you, O Lord, are loving.
Surely you will reward each person
according to what they have done.
The psalmist invites us to rest in this paradox – one thing spoken … two things heard. This tension that God is both capable and compassionate. And when we fear that God may not act in love to apply that strength on our behalf, the gospel takes up that final assurance of reward and rewrites the equation (because really, if my hope is in reward according to what I have done I’m certain this is not sufficient). God will reward each person according to what Jesus has done on our behalf – in the cross, the ‘one thing spoken’, announcing both the strength and love of God in vulnerability and suffering.
Today lets pray with the psalmist that we not be shaken – pouring out our hearts to God, seeking the grace to hope in God’s strength and love, firmly established in the unassailable salvation secured for us in Christ.
In Him,
Laurie
