Song writer and arranger Michael W. Smith in his recent “Message of Hope” was reminded by his pastor of some of the important things that have come out of times of crisis. For example, when bombs were raining down on the inhabitants in the city of London in WWII, C.S. Lewis began a series of radio interviews that became “Mere Christianity.” When as a young man Issac Newton left Cambridge, during the ravages of an outbreak of plague, he then developed the theory of gravity.

Horatio Spafford, a successful lawyer suddenly found himself ruined by the great Fire in Chicago in 1871. After reviving his business somewhat, he planned a trip to Europe with his family, but then had to send them on ahead, while he stayed behind to deal the economic downturn of 1873. During the journey, the ship his wife and four daughters was on collided with another ship, and afterwards his wife sent the heart rendering telegram “Saved alone…”
Horatio Spafford then boarded a ship to meet his wife in Europe, and when his ship reached near the spot where his four daughters had died, he penned the words-

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul…
